Tonia and Anoop on eliminating (more) non-lexicalized trees from XTAG
: the case of the verb trace in questions and imperatives.
Their summary:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
We have cases of non-lexicalized trees in our grammar which we would like
to eliminate because they cause parsing problems. One such case is the
verb "trace" tree which adjoins in to VP when "do" or any other aux verb
adjoins to S in yes-no questions (i.e., in "Is John leaving?"). However,
eliminating it has proved problematic. We will discuss two alternative
proposals to the verb-trace analysis.
