New graduate programme: Foundations of Complex Systems
There are a number of Ph.D. scholarships available for outstanding
students in a new Graduate Programme in Computing at the University of
South Australia. The research topics under the programme include type
systems, functional and object-oriented programming, and semantics.

GRADUATE PROGRAMME IN COMPUTING
The University of South Australia is establishing a distinguished
Graduate Programme in Computing with the first intake scheduled for
February 1998. We wish to enrol outstanding students into our Masters
and Ph.D. programmes in the area of Foundations of Complex Systems.
Research training will take place within the Advanced Computing
Research Centre, which is a component of the School of Computer and
Information Science within the Faculty of Information Technology.
RESEARCH THEME
Foundations of Complex Systems is the focus of the Graduate School in
Computing. We aim to train students in the methods of research
relevant to the design, implementation and analysis of the
large-scale, complex systems of the future. Such systems, as can
already be seen today, may consist of hardware, software and even
mechanical subsystems and their complexity is a function of the large
number of component parts from which they are constructed.
Increasingly, new computer-based systems will require the integration
of even larger numbers of components with the consequential increase
in complexity.
The Graduate Programme embraces many of the research projects being
conducted within the Advanced Computing Research Centre. The research
projects and the staff involved are drawn from the following four
research concentrations:
- concurrent systems
- databases
- intelligent systems
- software engineering
ADMISSION PREREQUISITES AND STUDY STRUCTURE
The Advanced Computing Research Centre wishes to encourage
participation in the Graduate Programme by international students and
visiting overseas researchers. This international emphasis is also
reflected by the current academic staff with members coming from many
different countries, many with high international standing in the
field.
Students in the Graduate Programme are expected to have completed a four
year degree in computing, or a related discipline, prior to admission
The Ph.D. course will take three years, with the first year taken up
by coursework in the key subjects of the Graduate Programme as well as
familiarisation with the student's research area, and the final two
years devoted to participation in a research project.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The programme offers a number of competitive Ph.D. scholarships
covering tuition wavers and/or living expenses. Australian applicants
will be expected to also apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award
(APA) scholarship. International applicants should apply also for a
University of South Australia Postgraduate Research Award (OPRS)
scholarship. Consideration for scholarships of the programme is
automatic if a student applies for either one of the above awards.
LOCATION
The University of South Australia is a multi-campus university in
Adelaide, the capital of the state of South Australia. Adelaide is a
city of a million people bordered by beautiful beaches to the west
and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east. The city enjoys a
Mediterranean climate, has excellent educational, cultural and
sporting facilities and is the centre of the Australian wine
industry.
RESEARCH AREAS
The core research areas of the Graduate Programme are as follows:
- formal specification and verification, both hardware and software;
- functional and object-oriented programming;
- type systems;
- semantics of computation;
- safety critical systems;
- database design and theory;
- data warehousing;
- medical information systems;
- highly-concurrent system modelling;
- reconfigurable computing
