                    Preliminary Call for Papers

                              POPL98

           The 25th Annual ACM SIGPLAN-SIGACT Symposium on
                 Principles of Programming Languages
             San Diego, California, January 19-21, 1998

Deadlines:
   Postal submissions:       July 11, 1997.
   Electronic submissions:   6:00am PDT, July 19, 1997.
   Notifications:            September 15, 1997.
   Final versions:           October 24, 1997.

The 25th symposium on Principles of Programming Languages (POPL98) will 
address fundamental principles and important innovations and 
accomplishments in the design, definition, analysis, and implementation 
of programming languages, programming systems, and programming 
interfaces. Both practical and theoretical papers on principles and 
innovations are welcome, including both frameworks for them and reports 
on experiences with their use.

Papers on a diversity of topics are welcomed, particularly ones that 
point out new directions. POPL98 is not limited to topics discussed in 
previous symposia or to formal approaches. In particular, papers 
integrating new principles into mainstream programming languages or 
widely used systems are encouraged. Authors concerned about the 
appropriateness of a topic may communicate by electronic mail with the 
program chair prior to submission.

A technical summary of a proposed paper is to be sent to the program 
chair. The summary should be 5000 words or less, excluding bibliography 
and figures. Reviewers shall be free to ignore any material that exceeds 
this limit.

Papers will be judged on originality, significance, correctness, and 
clarity. The summary should clearly express the contribution of the 
paper, both in general and in technical terms. It is essential to 
identify what was accomplished, explain its significance, and compare 
with previous work. Authors should make every effort to make the 
technical content of their papers understandable to a broad audience. If 
any author has published or presented on a related topic in a journal or 
a previous conference, the summary should explain how it advances such 
previous work. 

Papers must describe work not previously published in refereed venues. 
Simultaneous submission to POPL98 and another publication outlet 
(conference or journal) will be considered as grounds for rejection.

Submissions consist of a 100-200 word ASCII abstract and a 5000 words 
summary. Submissions must be either electronic (encouraged) or postal 
(discouraged).

Electronic submissions must be received by 6:00 AM Pacific Daylight 
Time, Saturday, July 19, 1997. Submissions may be sent as a single 
e-mail message to popl98@pa.dec.com (MIME attachments are allowed). The 
message should contain both the ASCII abstract and the Postscript 
summary. Electronic summaries should be in Postscript form, which must 
be interpretable by Ghostscript. The Postscript must use standard fonts, 
or include the necessary fonts, and must be prepared for USLetter 
(8.5"x11") or A4 page sizes. Authors who cannot meet these requirements 
should submit hardcopy by post instead.

Postal submissions must be sent to the program chair by airmail and 
postmarked (not metered) on or before Friday, July 11, 1997; 15 copies 
(printed double-sided if possible) must be provided. 

All submissions must include a return postal address, a telephone 
number, and an electronic mail address (if available).

These are firm constraints; submissions not meeting the criteria 
described above will not be considered. 

Receipt of the submissions will be acknowledged by e-mail within 2 days. 
It is the responsibility of the authors to inquire about the lack of a 
prompt acknowledgment: submissions that are lost or received late due to 
unusual circumstances might not be considered.

Notification of the acceptance or rejection of papers will be given by 
Monday, September 15, 1997. Full versions of the accepted papers must be 
received by Friday, October 24, 1997. If submitted in electronic form, 
the papers should be prepared according to the ACM guidelines for 
electronic publication. Authors of accepted papers will be required to 
sign ACM copyright release forms. Proceedings will be distributed at 
POPL98 and subsequently be available for purchase from ACM Press.

As in previous years, focused technical workshops will be held in 
conjunction with POPL98.
