held in Warsaw, Poland, the week before. For more details see
http://www.bell-labs.com/topic/conferences/lics/
http://www.ipipan.waw.pl/conferences/concur97/
Warsaw is easily connected to Bologna via Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich,
Rome, Paris, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, London and others.
CLIMATE
^^^^^^^
The average weather in Bologna in July is sunny and warm (daytime
temperatures around 28-30 degrees Celsius).
LOCATION
^^^^^^^^
The City of Bologna
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Visiting Bologna means a real immersion in history and art. Its historical
medieval centre stands out thanks to the Two (leaning) Towers, the old
markets and the labyrinth of narrow streets which suddenly open to reveal
treasures of art such as the Abbey and the Square of Santo Stefano, Piazza
della Mercanzia and the Archiginnasio, as well as other splendid churches:
S.Petronio, S.Domenico and S.Francesco. In Bologna, moreover, it is possible
to find numerous restaurants and taverns where to taste the most renown
Italian and Bolognese specialities!
The Conference Hall for ICALP'97
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The venue of the congress ICALP'97 will be the magnificent Aula Magna of
Santa Lucia. It was originally a church, begun in 1623 on the basis of
Girolamo Rainaldi's plan. The front and the apse have never been finished;
inside, however, it appears really striking thanks to its stately
proportions and its stucco works.
Deconsecrated in 1946, now it is the Aula Magna of the University of
Bologna, where the most important events and ceremonies are held.
Actually, we will use the Aula Absidale (entrance from Via De' Chiari 23)
inside the Church of Santa Lucia. The second hall for the parallel session
is the Aula Prodi (entrance from Piazza S.Giovanni in Monte 2), about 50
meters from Santa Lucia. Both are in the very centre of the city and are
air-conditioned.
See the map on the web for more details.
TRAVEL
^^^^^^
Bologna is located in the central southern area of Northern Italy and
it is easily reachable.
By air
~~~~~ Travellers arrive at Bologna `Marconi' Airport, which is
connected to several European cities (London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich,
Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Madrid, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Vienna, Barcelona,
Milan, Rome, Lyon, Oporto, Nice, Lugano). Shuttle buses (Aerobus)
operate every 30 min. between the airport and the Centre of Bologna
(ask the driver for the stop Via Indipendenza, S. Pietro). Tickets for
Aerobus cost 6,000 ITL and can be purchased on board. Taxi fare from
the airport to the centre of the city should not exceed 30,000 ITL.
By train
~~~~~~~ Bologna is the main railroad centre of Italy, as all the trains
connecting the south and the north of Italy have to pass through it.
See the web page for the train timetable.
By road
~~~~~~ Bologna is directly linked to three highways (A1 Milano-Roma,
A13 Padova-Bologna and A14 Bologna - Bari). The centre of the city is
however limited to residents and the streets are often quite narrow.
Limited car parking facilities are available for some hotels. Ask the
hotel reception for more information.
SOCIAL PROGRAMME FOR ACCOMPANYING PEOPLE AND GUESTS
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The conference office will organize trips for spouses and guests (or
lazy participants) with cities of arts as destination:
- Ravenna (ITL 55,000)
- Ferrara (ITL 55,000)
- Venice (ITL 60,000)
(Each fee includes the journey by private coach and the guided tour of the
city. It does not include the tickets to enter museums and monuments and,
with relation to Venice, the ticket to take ferries).
Each tour will be organized only if a minimum of 20 people register.
At the reception of the congress a complete social programme for accompanying
persons will be available, including further trips and events.
REGISTRATION
^^^^^^^^^^^^
Registration to ICALP and related workshops can be done with one single
operation. Please, complete the attached registration form and either
e-mail, fax, or physically mail it with the preferred payment to the Conference
Office at the above address.
^^^^^^
- Unesco Venice Office will partially support (e.g. fees and/or accommodation)
participants coming from less developed countries.
Requests should be sent to the conference office (e-mail or fax)
by May 20, specifying nationality, age, status and affiliation.
Applicants will be notified by June 1.
